Manual Physical Therapy

A Different Approach

Manual therapy takes a different approach to patient problems from that of traditional physical therapy.  A traditional physical therapist focuses on treating a symptom. Often, this works fine.  But some problems do not respond to traditional treatment, because the symptom is caused by a problem located elsewhere.  This is known as referred pain.  Medical literature has documented that physical conditions that are not resolved with traditional physical therapy often respond to manual therapy treatment.  By utilizing this method of treatment, Midland Physical Therapy, Inc. is able to quickly and effectively treat your symptoms at their source.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a specific hands-on treatment approach provided by a skilled physical therapist.

“Skilled hand movements intended to produce any or all of the following effects: improve tissue extensibility; increase range of motion of the joint complex; mobilize or manipulate soft tissues and joints; induce relaxation; change muscle function; modulate pain; and reduce soft tissue swelling, inflammation or movement restriction.” (defined by the International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists)

Symptom Localization Techniques

Our staff utilizes localization techniques that specifically identify the tissue, joint or segment that is causing the patient’s symptoms. Symptom localization is based on advanced integrated knowledge of anatomy, bio-mechanics, and function of the musculoskeletal system. This advanced training allows our therapists to specifically and effectively evaluate and treat all orthopedic problems, including the neck and other delicate structures.

Therapeutic Exercise

Exercises will be specifically tailored to each patient and can include core stabilization, stretching, strengthening, balance and gait training. A home program will be design uniquely for the current problem being addressed to assist in progressing therapy more quickly as well as long term to help prevent problems from returning.

Safety First

To keep our patients safe and our clients happy, Midland Physical Therapy, Inc. promotes effective and ethical manual physical therapy in accordance with the guidelines established by the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists and the American Physical Therapy Association.
