Elbow Brace

Is it getting harder to lift your laundry basket, pull open a door or twist off the cap to your water bottle without feeling pain or soreness in your elbow?  Is it getting more difficult to get through a day without experiencing elbow pain?  Well, you are not alone.  Elbow pain is one of the most common problems that therapists treat.  The two most common elbow diagnoses are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.  Wearing an elbow brace can help to alleviate elbow pain.

Wear an Elbow Brace

There are two different types of elbow braces that you can use in order to help alleviate your elbow pain.  Depending on the type and amount of pain will help you to decide which brace to choose.  The two types of elbow braces are:

  • Counterforce Brace – This type of brace will help to disperse the force away from your muscles prior to reaching the pain in your elbow.  When looking for a proper fit, place the most padded part of 2-3 finger widths below the pain in your elbow.  The brace should fit snug, but not so tight that the circulation if cut off to your hand.  This type of brace may be used for all activities.
  • Immobilization Brace – If you are experiencing severe elbow pain and/or you also have significant forearm pain, then you should use a wrist immobilization brace.  This type of brace will allow your wrist muscles to rest completely; allowing them to heal.  This brace should be worn for all activities.
